If you are staying overnight, stay inside or immediately outside the walls; the 2 km walk uphill from Guiomar after dinner is not what you want.
The season nobody expects is late January and early February, when Zamarramala's Fiesta de Santa Águeda (declared of national tourist interest) sees the women of the village take over the town for a day — book six weeks ahead. For something rural, La Granja de San Ildefonso and Valsaín sit 11 km east under the Sierra de Guadarrama and suit anyone pairing the palace gardens with hiking; expect €80–€140 in casas rurales. Pedraza, Sepúlveda, Turégano, Cuéllar, Coca and Ayllón are the walled villages 40–100 km out — cheaper (€60–€100) but you will need a car.
