Spanish long weekends in Segovia: the puente dates that fill the city

Six or seven bridge weekends a year turn a €90 room into a €175 one and put a 40-minute wait on every roast house — here are the dates through spring 2027 and how to work around them.
Why a puente hits Segovia harder than a season does
A puente is what Spaniards call the bridge day taken between a public holiday and the weekend. When one lands, Madrid empties north and west, and Segovia — 90 kilometres up the AP-6 and AP-61, or 27 minutes on the Avant — is one of the first places it lands. The effect is not gradual. Hotel rates inside the walls jump from a shoulder-season €90-110 to €150-190, minimum stays of two or three nights appear, and the pay car parks on the rim of the old town are full by 11:00.
It matters more than the season because it is unpredictable if you do not know the Spanish calendar. A visitor who books mid-October assuming autumn is quiet can walk straight into the 12 October weekend and pay February-to-December in a single night. Conversely, the four days immediately after a puente are among the cheapest and emptiest of the whole year, because everyone who wanted to come has just been.
The rest of 2026, date by date
Monday 12 October 2026 (Fiesta Nacional) creates a solid three-day weekend and is the busiest autumn date in the city. Sunday 1 November 2026, Todos los Santos, brings day-trippers rather than overnighters — the cemeteries fill with chrysanthemums, and the roast houses run Sunday-lunch service at full stretch. Then the big one: 8 December 2026, the Inmaculada, falls on a Tuesday, with 6 December (Constitución) on the Sunday before, so many people take Monday 7 off and travel from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8.
Christmas week 2026 has 25 December on a Friday, which strings the holiday into a natural long weekend, and New Year runs into 1 January 2027 on a Friday and Reyes on Wednesday 6 January. Expect €130-180 inside the walls across those dates with minimum stays, and near-total sell-out in La Granja and the village casas rurales. Public holiday calendars are set nationally, regionally and by each town hall, so confirm the exact 2026-2027 list with the Junta de Castilla y León and the Segovia ayuntamiento before you lock in flights.
Spring 2027: the expensive stretch
Semana Santa 2027 runs from Palm Sunday on 21 March to Easter Sunday on 28 March, with Holy Thursday and Good Friday on 25 and 26 March. Segovia's processions wind through the walled town in the evenings and the city is at its fullest of the entire year — €150-190 a night, three-night minimums common, restaurants booked out a fortnight ahead. It is a genuinely atmospheric week if you want it, and a terrible week if you came for empty cobbles.
Then Friday 23 April 2027, Día de Castilla y León, gives the region its own three-day weekend, followed by 1 May on a Saturday and Madrid's 2 May regional holiday on the Sunday — a two-day event rather than a bridge, but enough to fill the terraces. Mid-May usually brings the Titirimundi puppet festival, which is not a public holiday but behaves like one for hotel pricing. Check the festival's own programme for confirmed 2027 dates before booking around it.
The local holidays that catch visitors out
Two dates are Segovia's alone. San Frutos, the city's patron, falls on 25 October — a Sunday in 2026 — and is marked at the Cathedral with the traditional turning of the stone page of the saint's book. It is a municipal holiday, so expect shortened shop hours and a busy lunch service rather than a tourist crush. The bigger one is the Fiestas de San Juan y San Pedro in late June, roughly 24 to 29 June, when the city runs verbenas, concerts and a fairground and locals reclaim the streets from the day-trippers.
Out in the province, 25 July (Santiago) is a regional holiday, and Cuéllar's encierros in the last week of August — the oldest running of the bulls in Spain — fill every bed within 20 kilometres. If you are not going for the fiesta, avoid those dates in that corner of the province entirely. Programmes and dates for all of these shift slightly year to year, so verify with the relevant town hall or the provincial tourism office.
What actually changes on the ground
Parking is the first thing to break. The car parks around the edge of the walled town fill by late morning, and the free spaces down in the Eresma valley near San Marcos go soon after, leaving you circling Nueva Segovia and walking up. If your hotel offers parking on a puente, take it at almost any price — it is worth more than breakfast. The urban bus up from Segovia-Guiomar station also runs full, so allow extra time from the train.
The second is food. On a normal Saturday you can walk into a mid-range place at 21:30; on a puente Saturday you cannot, and the cochinillo houses will be turning people away at 14:15. Book both lunches before you travel. The third is the monuments: expect 30-45 minutes to get into the Alcázar between noon and four, and buy timed entry online where the site offers it. Confirm ticketing options with each monument directly.
Prices, minimum stays and cancellation
Budget €150-190 for a decent three-star inside the walls on a puente night, €200-260 for the boutique and historic-building end, and €90-120 for a guesthouse or a hotel out on the ring roads. Casas rurales in Pedraza, Sepúlveda, Turégano and Torrecaballeros typically move to a two-night minimum and €130-170 a night, sometimes with a whole-house-only rule on the December and Easter bridges.
Two defensive habits. Book refundable rates for puente nights if you are more than two months out, because the price occasionally softens in the last fortnight when a big block release comes back to market — not often, but it happens in October and December. And read the deposit terms: several small properties take 30-50 per cent up front and go non-refundable inside 14 days on holiday dates. Terms vary by property, so read them at the point of booking rather than assuming.
The smarter play: arrive the day after
My standing advice for anyone with flexible dates is to book the week following a puente rather than the puente itself. The Tuesday to Friday after 12 October 2026 has identical weather to the Saturday before it, rooms at €80-100, no queue at the Alcázar and terraces still open on the Plaza Mayor. The same trick works in mid-January after Reyes and in the first week of April after Easter, when spring is properly under way and the town has exhaled.
If you cannot move the dates, move the base. Sleeping in La Granja de San Ildefonso, Palazuelos de Eresma or Torrecaballeros on a puente typically saves €40-60 a night, gives you a parking space, and puts you 10-15 minutes by car from the aqueduct — drive in for 08:30, do the monuments before the crowd, and be out having judiones and lechazo somewhere with room to breathe by two o’clock.
