Segovia in November: the quietest month of the year

After the 1 November weekend the city empties for four straight weeks, rooms fall to €60-85, and the Eresma valley fog gives you the best photographs you will take here.
The weather turn, and when exactly it happens
November is when Segovia's continental climate stops pretending. Highs slide from about 14°C in the first week to 10°C by the last; nights go from 5°C to freezing. It is one of the wetter months by local standards, though that means around 50-55 millimetres spread over eight or nine days rather than anything sustained. What defines the month is fog: cold air pooling in the Eresma and Clamores valleys, so the Alcázar floats above cloud at nine in the morning and the Monasterio de El Parral appears and disappears while you watch.
The other turn is light. Clocks go back on 25 October 2026, so the first week of November already goes dark around 18:15 and by the end of the month the sun is gone before six. Plan your outdoor hours between 09:30 and 17:00 and treat the long evening as tapas time. The upside is that golden hour at the Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos happens at half past four, when you are awake and not still finishing lunch.
The 1 November weekend is the exception
Todos los Santos falls on Sunday 1 November 2026, and it is genuinely busy — Spanish families visit cemeteries with chrysanthemums, Madrid drives out for the weekend, and Segovia's roast houses run full Sunday-lunch service. Rooms inside the walls that will cost €70 a fortnight later ask €110-140, and the pay car parks on the edge of the old town fill by mid-morning. If you want quiet, do not arrive on the 30th or 31st of October.
Then, from about 3 November, the shutter comes down on the year. For four solid weeks until the December bridge, Segovia is as empty as a UNESCO World Heritage city ever gets — you can stand alone in the Cathedral cloister on a Wednesday and count six other people in the Alcázar's Sala de Reyes. Nothing about the monuments is worse in November; there are just no other visitors sharing them with you, and the hotel market knows it.
What rooms cost when nobody wants them
November is the floor alongside February. Guesthouses and small hostales on the quieter old-town streets do €45-60 for a double. Three-stars inside the walls run €60-85 midweek and €85-110 on a Saturday. The upper end — historic buildings, boutiques, anything with a Cathedral view — drops into the €95-130 band that it will never touch again until January. Hotels on the ring roads towards Nueva Segovia and La Albuera sit at €55-75 with free parking thrown in.
This is the month when asking works. Email the property directly, mention two or three nights midweek, and you will often be offered a better room, breakfast included, or parking waived rather than a lower headline rate. It is also the safest month for a last-minute booking: arriving on a Tuesday with nothing reserved is a viable plan in November in a way it absolutely is not in April. Confirm heating and glazing before committing to a cheap room in an old building.
What is actually on
The city's European cinema festival, MUCES, has traditionally taken over Segovia's screens and cultural venues in November, bringing several days of screenings, guests and a noticeably livelier evening in an otherwise sleepy month; check the festival's own programme for the confirmed 2026 dates and venues. Beyond that, the calendar is thin by design — this is the gap between San Frutos on 25 October and the Christmas lights, and the city uses it to catch its breath.
That thinness is the point. November suits people who want the buildings, the food and the walking rather than the fiestas: the full Eresma valley circuit from San Marcos past El Parral and Vera Cruz up to Zamarramala, the Jewish quarter and the old cemetery on the Cuesta de los Hoyos, the Cathedral's tower visit if it is running, and a slow half-day at La Granja. The November table: mushrooms, game, beans
This is the best eating month in the province and hardly anyone comes for it. Níscalos — saffron milk caps — come out of the pinewoods around Valsaín and the Pinares after the autumn rain and turn up sautéed with garlic and jamón on menus all over the city. Boletus appear on the better boards. Judiones de La Granja are at their most convincing, game and escabeche show up in the villages, and the roast ovens at the cochinillo houses are working through the coldest weather they will see all year.
Prices do not move with the season: menú del día €14-18, cochinillo €25-32 a head, a ración of setas €12-16, coffee €1.60-2. What does change is availability — Sunday lunch is still the busy service and still needs booking, but at 21:30 on a Wednesday you can walk into almost anywhere. Ask what is fresh rather than ordering off the printed menu; in November the answer is usually mushrooms, and it is usually the best thing they have.
The closures to plan around
The La Granja fountains have finished for the year by November, so go for the palace, the frost-bitten parterres and the beech avenues instead — verify winter hours with Patrimonio Nacional. The Vera Cruz church has historically kept limited winter opening, including a November closure in some years, so check before walking down into the valley for it specifically. Most smaller museums close Mondays as usual.
Out in the province, the villages run on weekend trade: Pedraza, Sepúlveda, Turégano, Ayllón and Coca will have restaurants open Friday to Sunday and rather less midweek, and castle opening hours contract. The Hoces del Duratón canoe season does not operate through the vulture nesting period, but the walking routes and the viewpoint at the Ermita de San Frutos are open and at their most dramatic with mist in the gorge. Who should book November, and who should not
Book it if you are here for photographs, architecture, food and low prices, and if you can dress for 10°C with a wind. Two nights midweek in the second or third week of the month, a hire car for one day to do La Granja and Valsaín, and long lunches. Budget around €150-180 for two nights in a good three-star plus €35-45 a head for the roast pig, and you will have the sort of trip that costs €300 more in April.
Skip it if you want terraces, fountains, fiestas, village life or a lively tapas crawl on a Tuesday night, or if short days will frustrate you — you get roughly nine and a half hours of daylight and a fair chance of grey. The honest comparison is late September or early October: €30 a night more, warmer, longer light, and busier. November wins only on price and solitude, but it wins on those decisively.
